The all-round application of TPU in sports shoes: upper, midsole, outsole
TPU has excellent processing properties such as injection molding, extrusion, calendering, blow molding, and compression molding. Its application covers the three major shoe-making projects of sole, upper, and bonding, and is favored by a large number of shoe-making manufacturers. As can be seen from the figure below, TPU almost covers the entire range of shoe manufacturing processes
The application of TPU in sports shoes mainly consists of three components: upper, midsole, and outsole.
1. Upper: TPU yarn, leather
Breathable fly woven uppers and waterproof leather uppers are common sports shoe uppers. Flyknit refers to the integral weaving of the entire shoe upper, which can be woven using TPU yarn. The texture is soft and extremely durable, and the wear resistance is high. It is easy to perform hot pressing 3D molding, fixation, etc.
In addition to yarn woven shoe uppers, TPU can also be made into synthetic leather for use in shoe uppers, decorative pieces, and more.
2. Shoe midsole: ETPU
The midsole is the most popular and mature component of TPU sports shoes. The common process is to use supercritical kettle foaming technology to make TPU into foam particles, combined with steam or microwave molding to obtain the ETPU midsole. Compared to traditional EVA midsoles, E-TPU shoe material has excellent resilience, extremely low compression set, and good wearing experience.
Then, the TPU insole is also prepared through foaming technology, which first foams into a sheet and then cuts it. Currently, its application is still very limited.
3. Shoe outsole: Durable and anti slip TPU
TPU can be molded into shoe soles through injection molding, which have the characteristics of wear resistance and high strength. In addition, the anti slip effect is also an important indicator for evaluating the performance of TPU shoe soles.
In addition to the upper, midsole, and outsole, TPU is also used in sports shoes for anti twist plates, heel covers, Hong Kong Bao (hot melt adhesive), films, and so on.
